With the walls in place, my first challenge was to wrap my head around the puzzle that is strengthening and securing the walls so they stay there. I knew what I had to do, but making sure to do things in the right order took some thought. Eventually I got there.

Day 19
Today I focused on making sure the walls were straight. To do this I had to remove the braces and check every section with a spirit level. I was pleased with how solid the walls felt, even though there isn't much holding them down. By the time I am through they should Continue reading →
This was going to be a big week. We had some friends visiting so I wanted to finish the walls and get them raised while they were around, always a big moment when building a house. Before this could be achieved I needed to finish framing and figure out the logistics of getting them vertical. So there was lots of work to be done.

Day 15
Today was a very productive day! The friends who are staying with us right now kindly offered to help with the house (thanks Andrea and Brady!). We managed to buy, cut and lay out all of the wood Continue reading →
After a bit of a break it was time to crack on with framing the walls. In normal house construction, with a well oiled team, this is usually a very fast stage. I am doing this for the first time, and am having to cut every piece of wood to a custom length, so we will see how 'fast' this goes.

Build Day 10
Today I got to use my new framing nailer to build the first wall. It actually was a little harder than I expected! Being the first time I had framed, I was learning as I go (no change there then), I was also learning how to use Continue reading →
After waiting around for so long to start the build I have been very go go go on the house. My plan is to get the house watertight and road worthy so I can move it into the driveway where we are living and eliminate the rent I am paying on the barn. This does factor into my wanting to make good progress on the house, but mainly it's because I am having so much fun.

Build Day 5
Today I finished bolting the blocking in place. I also found out the hard way that a 5/8th inch bolt does not have a 5/8th inch nut (the bolt is 5/8" in diameter, Continue reading →
I had been very sick for the best part of a month and excessive coughing had left me with a cracked rib, all of which delayed the start of the build. Despite some mild pain my doctor had given me the nod to start some work, as long as I didn't get too carried away. It feels like I had to wait forever, but finally I can start!

Getting set up
Waking up on the morning when I took possession of the barn (where I will start the build) it felt like my first day of school, or a new job. When I mentioned this to Carly over breakfast she Continue reading →
If you are like me, you may have found this page because you are considering importing a trailer into Canada from the US, but aren't sure how complicated the process is. At first glance this may seem like a lot to take in, but don't be daunted - it is actually pretty easy. As long as you have your ducks in a row, you will have a smooth importation process.
While doing my own research I found the following very useful:
L-Dawg and Roar's Tiny House
SHED: Mobile Habitat Project
Tiny Timber
Tiny Nest
It was resources like these that made figuring out the process so easy. I have Continue reading →
