After many moons away from the project, followed by many more researching and planning the next stages of the build, some progress finally occurred in the house! A huge thank you to Brady who came over from Vancouver to help for the weekend. I was also fortunate to connect with Jake, an electrician who agreed to answer all of my (many) questions on the electrical planning as well as actually carry out the work. Thanks guys, I appreciate the support.

The final push! Shingling the end walls of the loft made my head hurt to think about. With a 12:12 pitch below and a 4:12 pitch above, I not only needed to shingle straight in this very awkward, tight space but I also wanted to make the shingles line up with the shingles on the wall below.
Instead of thinking too hard I decided to just go with it and rely on my newly acquired shingling experience to back me up. This tactic worked surprisingly well and I was happy with the outcome.

Time to put a roof on this house. Just taking delivery of the roofing metal seemed like a victory, but there was much more work to be done.
It happened to be the hottest time of the year here while I was working on this. Under the metal roof of the barn with the sun beaming down on it, I was working on my metal roof, with spotlights also beaming. I have never sweated so much in my life. At least I got to test it's waterproofness.

Shingling shingling and more shingling!
It took a while to get my head in to the shingling, but I managed to find a good rhythm. However rhythm or no rhythm, shingling is extremely time consuming!
The second wall went well, I had to figure out a good method for cutting the shingles at an angle when they hit the roofline. Going up and down the ladder while making custom shingles meant that each one could take up to 5 minutes to install!

No more self-imposed deadlines. I'm not sure why I keep giving myself deadlines to meet, because I undoubtedly don't meet them and get disappointed. I have decided to just keep working at it and try not to think too far ahead.
Without any detailed plans to go off I kept my 'wing it' approach to the utility box as I added trim and the roof sheathing. Cutting pieces on the fly, it felt good to not be overthinking, just building.

A little more work got the roofing insulation fully installed. Not I could finally start thinking about sheathing the roof. While I was figuring this out, Mo gave me a hand finishing off staining the fascia boards.
It took me a little while to get going with the sheathing, as there were a few details to consider, but once I had the first piece installed the rest came together fairly easily. I managed to get in a bit of a flow, which meant I could just get on and work without it requiring too much of my mental capacity. Which was Continue reading →
